Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a goal-oriented psychotherapy that helps you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to psychological and even physical issues. By focusing on the present, CBT teaches practical, self-help skills to challenge negative thinking, modify problematic behaviors, and improve overall mood and functioning. It is a widely researched and effective treatment for conditions like depression, anxiety, and stress, PTSD, phobias, addictions, relationship issues and can also help you with issues such as chronic pain and insomnia.

Grief and Loss

Grief counseling helps you understand and cope with the complex feelings and reactions that follow a significant loss, such as bereavement, divorce, empty nest syndrome or significant life change. Grief affects the whole person—mind, body, spirit, and relationships. Loss refers to the actual event or situation that triggers the grief, while grief is the process of experiencing and adapting to that loss. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, and it's a personal journey of adjustment, not a fixed process.

Everyone has experienced grief and loss, and you will have your unique emotional experiences and ways of coping in your own way and at your own pace. Sudden, violent or unexpected loss or trauma will impose additional strains on your coping skills. Each loss is unique.

Grief counselling helps you to identify negative thought patterns and replace them with more positive thoughts. This will be a journey for you to learn coping mechanisms to navigate life after loss.

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term goal-focused evidence-based therapeutic approach, which incorporates positive psychology principles and practices, and which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems. Working together you and I will construct a detailed description of how your life will be different when the problem is gone, or your situation improved to a degree which is satisfactory to you.

Typically, this process involves identifying and exploring previous “exceptions,” e.g. times when you have successfully coped with or addressed previous difficulties and challenges. SFT is a unique way to allow you to discover what will work best in your situation. SFBT can help with stress, anxiety, anger management, and addictions by focusing on desired behaviours rather than the problems origins. It is suitable for those that are frustrated with telling their story repeatedly to multiple therapists.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a behavioral therapy incorporating values-guided and mindful action. With my assistance, you will identify your values, desires, and aspirations to motivate behavioral change. Some core values emphasized in ACT include compassion, connection, contribution, and vitality. Clients with depression, ADHD, and drug and alcohol addiction have been shown to receive help from ACT. Acute stress in crisis situations can be addressed using ACT to provide immediate support and practical strategies.

Six Principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
• Cognitive defusion.
• Expansion and acceptance.
• Contact and connection with the present moment.
• The Observing Self.
• Values clarification.
• Committed action (Harris, 2006; Harris, 2007).

Warning: ACT is not suitable for people whose cognitive functioning is impaired such that they have difficulty comprehending and generating answers to routine assessment questions or virtually.

Timeline Therapy

Adapted from Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), timeline therapy acknowledges that you are a collection of memories, and when accessed using visualisation, dissociation, and focused questioning help you release negative emotions and limiting beliefs tied to past experiences, effectively changing the emotional charge associated with memories without deleting them. By accessing the unconscious mind, the technique aims to provide lasting emotional release and facilitate personal growth and forward momentum.

Timeline Therapy addresses negative emotions, limiting beliefs, and unresolved past events by allowing individuals to access, process, and transform memories on their internal "timeline". It helps you release emotions like anger, hurt, fear, overcome phobias, and resolve issues that hinder your growth and well-being.

Virtual Dream Therapy

Virtual dream theory asserts that we explore a potentially infinite repertoire of predictive dream scripts. Dreams often serve as a window into unresolved feelings or hidden fears that may not surface during waking hours. By decoding the messages in awakened virtual dreams, you may process emotions, confront repressed memories, and gain a better understanding of your inner conflicts. The technique entails writing a brief spontaneous dreamlike story on themes of loss, using a flexible set of assigned elements (personalised by the therapist) to create a story. After the story writing you and I will work together to analyse the meaning of that story, which will allow you to explore unresolved issues and identify solutions to them.

PTSD, depression, phobias, recurrent nightmares, memory loss and anxiety disorders can be explored with Virtual Dream Therapy.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process of artmaking to improve mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It works by facilitating self-expression and communication through visual and tactile media like drawing, painting, or collage, allowing individuals to gain insight into their thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive environment.
Anxiety and depression, trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, stress reduction, improving self-esteem and self-awareness are all known to benefit from art therapy. Supporting individuals with dementia or other cognitive disorders and enhancing communication and connection are additional benefits.

Seminars for Families (for clients and their families).

A family member with a mental health issue usually goes to a therapist for help or a day or stay-in facility. This is helpful for the client but what about the family, friends or work colleges – how do they cope when their loved one returns home or to work? Along with unsure expectations a lot of family members simply do not know what to do.

With this issue in mind Regain Living Centres have created a program just for families, which includes education around mental health illness and how to relate to their family member to minimise distress for everyone in the family.

The program includes interactive sessions where the client is invited to some sessions where roleplay and psychoeducation will be used and where all family members have their say.
Please contact me if you would be interested in this program which runs in different sunshine coast locations.
Next Seminar will be in Mooloolaba.
